KEN JOHNSON gives us an update on V: The Movie
Trilogy. "As described in the earlier announcements below, the new
incarnation of Desilu Studios is eager to bring V The Movie to a theater
near you. Desilu is currently endeavoring to get their overall house in
order while simultaneously finalizing the funding for our picture. The V
Trilogy is the most important project on their agenda."
NEW
- 02/06/2018 -
KEN JOHNSON publically announces that Desilu Studios
is on board to bring "V" to the big
screen!
"We are delighted to team up with Desilu to bring the timeless -- and
timely -- story of resistance against tyranny into the 21st Century,"
Johnson said. "V will be the first of a cinematic trilogy which will tell
the full epic tale in the manner I always envisioned."
"Desilu was revolutionary in its time and as the saying goes, everything
old is new again," said maverick businessman
Charles B. Hensley who acquired the Desilu brand with a vision of
reimagining Desilu into a global entertainment and commercial empire.
Hensley continued, "Coming from the consumer products space, it makes
sense for the company's trajectory and shareholders to focus on film and
television properties with high merchandising and licensing potential such
as V The Movie Franchise." "Identifying and driving valuable allied profit
centers, maximizing income potential for each property is our ideal
content model," added Michael Mann, Exec VP
Business Development.
The highly sought-after project was brought to Desilu by development
executive Sean Stone. "V is a multi-billion dollar film franchise and
merchandising juggernaut," said Desilu Exec VP Steven Posen, adding, "we
couldn't be more excited and honored to bring this film to the millions
of devoted fans worldwide."
"It's no small irony that the new Desilu will be building on the sci-fi
tradition with 'V', considering Desilu was the original studio responsible
for Star Trek!" added Stone.
About: Desilu Studios, Inc. is a Delaware
corporation engaged in film, television, merchandising, content streaming,
theme parks and cinemas.
Message from KEN JOHNSON:
Perspective...
From Kenny to the fans and devoted friends of V...
The
announcement above is a very important and extremely positive
development toward achieving our goal of making V The Movie
and the two sequels based upon my novel V The Second Generation.
Desilu has entered into a contract with our company, Victory
Pictures, which grants them an Exclusive Option on the motion picture
rights to V The Movie
and the opportunity to present it to their investors. Desilu
hopes to have the full funding in place within the next few months.
Once that financing is complete we will be able to announce when
actual production of the movie will commence. In the meantime we are
indeed delighted to be involved with the great team at Desilu -- who are
as enthusiastic and eager as we are to make a movie that we
can all be proud of.
Keep checking back here to learn about our
progress and...

MICKEY JONES, who played Ham Tyler's
sidekick, Chris, has entered hospice. Here is a message from his dear
friend, Michael (not Ironside): "I spoke with Mickey's wife, Phyllis,
today. She gave me an update on Mickey. He had made the decision to go
into Hospice (God Bless that
organization) and is continuing on this mortal "Ride". I am Happy to
report that predictions of his imminent departure (like so many
predictions) were premature. He can currently say "rumors of my demise
have been greatly exaggerated". He is currently off all medication. The
end may be near but he is resting peacefully. I am planning to see him
either today or tomorrow."

NEW
- 7/25/2011 - Our beloved "Chris Farber" from V:TFB has an urgent
message. Today, one fan, Steph, has already agreed to have her kidney
tested.
MICKEY JONES
NEEDS YOUR HELP. He has entertained, done charitable work, and taken on
challenging roles for many decades. However, he is now faced with the
biggest role of his life: kidney failure.
Three days a week and several hours each day Mickey is connected to a
dialysis machine. This has prevented him from doing many things he loves
and it may eventually take his life. Even with those he knows and his
own notoriety, he has been unable to obtain a new kidney. Efforts were
made to have his name added to the transplant list at Cedars Sinai
Medical Center, however, he is considered too old to get a living
kidney. You see our government cuts off all transplants at 75 years of
age and Mickey is 70. There is currently a six year wait. So time is of
the essence.
Mickey Jones is one of the most compassionate men you will ever meet.
He is caring, selfless, and ever-giving of himself, time, and energy.
But now its time for the tables to be turned. Six of his friends and
family have already stepped forward to offer a kidney. However, one by
one they were eliminated for various medical reasons. Now we must reach
beyond that circle.
This letter is written in urgency and distress. Whether you are a
friend, fan or family member, you are reading this because Mickey has
touched your life. We need to find a way to make him smile again,
a way to help his life return to a level of normalcy, a way to keep him
in our lives for as long as possible.
Will you help? Do you know someone who can help?
Once again, the question is asked: "GOT KIDNEY?" Please spread the word
Email Mickey for more
information on how you can be tested.

PROJECT ALICE'S goal has always been to
get "V" renewed for a 3rd Season, no matter which network. Now
that ABC has cancelled "V," it's time to continue our plea to
WARNER BROTHERS
to shop "V" to other interested parties. After careful
consideration and research, the most viable place for "V" to continue is
on cable's
Turner Network Television (TNT.)TNT
and WB are subsidiaries of
Time Warner.
With this June's Steven
Spielbergalien
invasion series "Falling Skies" already given a 2-season summer deal
on
TNT,
with the first season premiering this June 19, TNT taking "V" to pair with
it on Sunday nights is a VERY viable plan. They could make it their
Alien Invasion Summer
Sundays !! (Thank you Patrick J. Gillease for the research and catch
phrase!)
We need to immediately refocus ALL our Project Alice efforts solely toward
the WB execs to pick "V" up on TNT !!! Yes, The CW (which WB also owns) and
SyFy can also be targeted, but TNT should be the prime focus, since they
picked up "Southland"
after NBC canceled it
(and SL was a WB-made show as well).
Please continue writing to the 2 WB Execs:
Mr. Bruce Rosenblum & Mr. Peter Roth (addresses above), but THIS
time, write that you're a part of Project Alice and you want to see TNT pick
up "V!"

SCOTT ROSENBAUM
EXCLUSIVE Q&A by Ilana
For the "V" fans!!!
Special thanks to WB for making this happen! And
super thanks to Mr. Rosenbaum THE Man himself!!!
Q: Please explain the daily duties of a Showrunner vs.
Executive Producer. How do you have time for both? Also, youve done writing.
Who makes the decision to have YOU write an episode vs. a different writer? How
did you come to partner up with Gregg Hurwitz?
A: The showrunner and the Executive Producer are usually the same person. The
Showrunner is essentially the CEO of the TV show. The showrunner oversees every
aspect of the production: from the writing, casting, producing, editing,
marketing, directing, etc... There are often times other Executive Producers.
Some are high level writers. Some are producers who work on the show (like Steve
Pearlman).
In regards to having enough time to do it all, you just find the time. I am
lucky in that Steve Pearlman (an EP) is someone I trust implicitly with the
production and post production of the show. Steve carries a lot of weight for me
in these areas allowing me to focus more on writing. Gregg was a writer I hired
after I came on board. I had read a pilot of his and liked it. We met and
decided to hire him onto the staff as a writer/producer. Gregg had little TV
experience but it turned out it was the best hire I ever made as he's been a go
to writer on the show from Day 1.
Q: In V, it is mentioned there are 538 Motherships (not including the 29
already announced.) Is there a significant reason for the number 538? Who came
up with that number and why?
A: 538 is the number of members of Congress and the Senate. I had government on
my mind so I decided on that number as I was polishing the script.
Q: Are there any inside jokes in Season 2? Example: In Season One, an address
was 4400 as a hello to Joel Gretschs previous TV series. If yes, please name
a few of the inside jokes that we can look for as we re-watch Season Two.
A: Not really. There are some character names of friends and family but not more
than that.
Q: Will there be a Season Two DVD Release and if so, when? Will there be any
extras we can look forward to, such as outtakes, audition tapes, voiceovers,
etc. Audition tapes would really be cool to see!
A: There will be a season 2 DVD release. I am not sure of the release date yet
but I do know that it will be filled with goodies. Lots of outtakes, deleted
scenes, special features from the writers, producers and actors, and
commentaries.
Q: Please tell us the path you took to rise to Executive Producer. How did you
start in showbiz? Is this something you always wanted to do or you just fell
into it? Please share any fun or not so fun stories from your very first couple
of show biz jobs.
A: I actually started as a staff writer on THE SHIELD. I worked my way up to
Executive Producer there. Then I went to CHUCK as an EP. In the middle of Season
3 of Chuck, I was asked by WB brass to take over V. In regards to stories, there
are too many to tell. It'd make up a novel. End of the day, hard work and
perseverance, mixed with some talent and luck got me where I am.
Q: Do you seek out your next job (i.e. as a contractor?) or do you work for a
company that pays you year round and you get asked to work on a show ? How does
the process for what you do work?
A: It's different with every job. Sometimes a company will seek you out to run a
show. Sometimes there's a show I'm interested in and I'll seek it out. Most
writer jobs however are like independent contract work. No guarantees. You work
on a show and get paid per episode produced. If the show ends, you stop getting
paid. There are some "overall deals" where you're paid a yearly salary but these
are rare.
Q: Marco Beltrami is the series music composer. Marco studied under Joe Harnell,
who was the composer for V The Original in 1983. Was Marco hired because he
studied under Joe? I know casting directors usually hire the actors, but whos
in charge of hiring the music director? Were any other musicians being
considered?
A: Since I came onboard after Marco was hired, I can't tell you that. However,
the showrunner hires the composer (and everyone else on the show) so Scott
Peters would've hired Marco. Thank God because he's brilliant.
Lastly, thanks to Project Alice for the support. You are amazing. The entire
cast and crew thanks and salutes you!

Fan campaigns to save their
favorite shows has become a
familiar thing on the
Internet...and in the case
of
Project Fringe Friday,
it might have possibly
helped that TV series get
renewed for another season!
Well, fans are taking up a new cause: Project Alice, and saving their fave sci-fi show V. We caught up with V Executive Producer Scott Rosenbaum at WonderCon recently to chat about the show...and he was well aware of, and supportive, of Project Alice:
"The V fans have been great so far, emailing the network, emailing the studio, Project Alice...it all makes a huge difference."
Project Alice on Facebook has over 3000 members so far, and is growing. The page urges fans to show ABC and Warner Bros. that they support V and want to see it renewed, and have made available an online petition that they can sign (as of this writing it has over 4,000 signatures). Project Alice also makes "fan bulletins" on YouTube to help spread the word:
Will the fan campaign Project Alice have the success of Project Fringe Friday? One thing is sure -- the fans are important. As Rosenbaum told us, "The fanbase means everything, because the reality is, you make these shows for yourself, and you make them for the fans -- and there is no bigger V fan than myself."
Check back in with MTV Geek on Monday for our interviews with V stars Elizabeth Mitchell and Marc Singer!

shows total take for an entire season does directly
correlate to how many shows are aired. If you air more
episodes of a hit, youll make more money overall; if
you air more episodes of a bomb, youll lose more. So
far, ABC has been betting against V, with its 4
episodes, 8 episodes and then 10 episodes. (I guess this
is because sci-fi is hard enough by itself, let alone
when it is serialized and doesnt fit your overall
demographic.) Below, though, Im going to show you why
they can keep it. Some of the numbers are from various
sources and are may be off here and there. Most numbers
are from articles I found in Google news.
At an
average of 1.9, any show without a skyrocketing budget
should be able to make money. According to oft-cited
numbers on TVBTN, Vs ad rates were $100,000 each this
season. Thats probably about right, but Ive read they
were over $120k; Im still going with that lower number
as our starting point to do some math.
With
about 19 minutes of commercials, ABC can air up to 38
30-second ads per episode (they may have run more, since
every episode of V this season ran for 61 minutes,
meaning another $200,000 can be made that Im not
counting). The shorter, 15 second ads cost more per
second, running about $55-60K. If you dont buy ad time
in bulk, these prices can actually double, but, again,
Im assuming the lower, just so you can see how
profitable V is at a minimum.
If half
of Vs sellable time is filled by 30 seconds spots and
the other half with 15 second ads, youd have $1.9
million for the longer ones and $2.3 million for the
shorter ones. Together, that means V is pulling in
$4.2m/episode, more than double what it costs WB to
produce them, if the oft-quoted $2m per episode cost is
correct. If WB licenses V at 3 million per episode, WB
would make a $1m profit for each 42 minute show it
licenses to ABC. On the other side of the relationship,
ABC would make $1.2 million, which means it is making
more off of the show than WB and, therefore, the better
end of the deal, as should be the case when youre
selling something meant to be resold. ABC, then, pulled
in $12 million for Vs second season. And that is with
the smaller figures used to make a point; that $12m/10
episode season could be up to 20% or so less than ABC
actual profit.
By the
time V aired this season, ABCs new shows had all
flopped (even the ones that were produced in-house).
When V came along, its performance, by comparison and on
its own wasnt at all horrible, especially considering
no ad money was spent on V after its third episode ran,
sometime around the State of the Union. If anything, the
only mistake ABC made with V was not having an 11th
episode, which could have aired last week instead of
that best of the movies special, which earned a 1.6 in
Vs place, which was lower than V ever went (though, on
the bright side, it probably cost nothing to make).
V has not
bottomed out, as is clear by the fact that its high (2.1
for the season premiere) is only .2 above its average,
(which was at 1.9, its average). Since V will be cheaper
to produce next year (with fewer stars/regulars; also,
the lions share of its effects were produced for the
finale alone and are reused from episode to episode), WB
might lower the licensing, but it shouldnt have to,
since ABC is making more than twice what it is paying
for it.
Lots of ABC
shows make more money per episode than V does, but only
a few of them are scripted. Last year, Desperate
Housewives pulled in $5.5m in ads per episode, but, as
an in-house show, all of its costs and promotional
consideration fell on ABC. With a higher budget than V
that is fueled by several multi-million dollar paydays
casting alone probably eats up close to half of those
revenues, leaving $2.7m/episode, 40% or so of which goes
to the production arm of ABC, with the broadcast arm
pulling in $1.6-1.8 per episode. That means DH is
probably pulling in less than half a million dollars
more per episode than V and that difference is going to
diminish if/when new contracts are signed in the coming
weeks.
So, ABC can
simply license V from WB, leaving its ABC production
company to a budget that is already being stretched by
the rising costs of its aging hits, as well as the
management of a reported dozen or so pilots with as yet
undetermined individual budgets. A deal with WB to air
10-13 more episodes of V some time after November, when
the seasons overall profitability is determinable,
wouldnt be a bad thing. It should definitely perform
better than at least two or three early starters (if the
history of any one network is has anything to say).
Plus, if Body of Proof fails, they get to have at least
one veteran drama that isnt already a dinosaur.
V can
happen. It can be profitable. ABC has to hedge its bets,
yes, but its been profitable thus far and stable its
entire second season, which is rare for genre and sci-fi
(though it isnt unheard of).

3/11/2011 - KEN JOHNSON
responds to the Mothership debate! Please see the article written below
from Patrick J. Gillease on 3/09/2011 which sparked fan Andy to share his ideas.
SEE KJ's RESPONSE AT THE BOTTOM of this post.
ANDY:
There's a wrong assumption in the article that assumes that the landing
bays are in the circular indentation. They're actually spaced outside
of there on the underside of the mothership. There are two landing
bays, one above the other spaced inbetween the ships lasers. Have a
look at the following image and you'll see where they are. The
indentation is the gravity drive. When we see the landing bays being
used, they correspond to the landing bays highlighted in the
picture. There are 26 landing bays on the original.
PATRICK:
I believe Andy is incorrect. Nobody ever said the areas he pointed to
are landing bays. First he says there are only 2, then he says 26. Even
his own argument is inconsistent. Plus the landing bays ARE in the
circular area. We saw this in the original miniseries.
What I think REALLY is going on here is that KJ first depicted the
smaller ships coming out of the ring. And I suspect he would say all the
landing bays were encircled in there. But by the time he left TFB, they
made an actual filming model, which I own, and some design elements were
changed and/or enhanced when all they had were matte paintings for the
MS in the original.
In the end, Andy and I may BOTH be right. I would ask KJ and see what he
says? We clearly saw a shuttle coming out of the ring in the original
mini, so were ALL the landing bays in that ring - at least in HIS
original?!
KEN
JOHNSON:
We were working so fast and loose when we created the original designs
-- literally over a weekend -- I don't think we ever stopped to
analyze exactly where all the landing bays would be. There was never any
"master blueprint" created such as one can find for Star Trek's
Enterprise orThe
Titanic, etc..--
The first shuttle that appears does emerge from the inside center,
however when it returns from the U.N. roof the camera pans it up to
a bay entry point that appears to be on the outside perimeter,
otherwise we'd see the "inner circle" bending off toward the left
side of the frame.
Basically, we were working very impressionistically.

3/09/2011 - Here
are some cool insights from my former partner in the 1980's "Quad V" fan
club, Supreme Commander Patrick Gillease. He was commenting to me about
how one of "V's" most prominent features compares between the two
series, specifically the Motherships. Read on.....
In both versions of "V," the signature moment is in the
beginning of each saga when the Motherships appear in our skies
and take position over their target cities. Of course this was
most influential in the original 1983 mini-series because it was
the first time we had seen it. It was also riveting in the ABC
version, but by then, the impact was less since it had already
been done before, and the movie "Independence Day" ripped off
"V" with their entire premise years afterwards.
The original Motherships were classic in their simplistic and
streamlined design: a traditional, perfectly round saucer, aimed
after humanity's typical view of what a UFO looks like, only
much grander in scale at three miles wide for each. What an
imposing presence these 50 ships took on as they flew in from
space and hovered over our global cities.
ABC's "V" design team decided they wanted to contemporize the
Motherships and make them a little more specific, rather than
just aping the original saucer design. At first, this annoyed me
as a fan, but I quickly grew to appreciate the new Motherships
when I read an article about their design cues, which many of
you may not know. Each Mothership is fashioned from the head of
Earth's Cobra snake since the Visitors are reptiles themselves.
The design team rightfully thought that making them look like a
genuine reptile would more accurately represent what the V's
would design and fly in.
From there, the difference between the 2 Mothership designs is
more pragmatic. The original Motherships had multiple landing
bays, but all of them were congregated in the central circular
opening in the underbelly of the ship. This made them all
simultaneously vulnerable to an enemy attack. A single
Mothership could conceivably have it's entire fleet of
skyfighters and shuttles immobilized if an enemy attacked the
Landing Bay ring. As such, it was a very bad design. Only the
simple, circular nature of the original Motherships wins out in
the attack comparison, because nobody could determine where the
front and back of the ships were.
With ABC's Motherships, the front of each ship is the Cobra's
"face", with its "eyes" slanting upwards from the "mouth" of
windows on the Bridge. The stern of each ship is another row of
windows in the wide-flanked rear, thus making these Motherships
more vulnerable to an enemy attack since their bow and stern can
be easily detected. Where they have their overall edge is
in their underbellies, with not one, but SIX landing bay
circles, five of which surround the main opening in the center.
Now, an enemy would have to attack multiple openings to try and
take out the landing bays and their fighters - something
unlikely to happen. Of course, that's assuming that the ABC
Motherships even have skyfighters, since after 2 seasons, we
have sadly yet to see a single one?!
A final comparison can be made with ABC's stealth capabilities
for its Motherships, which was something lacking in the original
NBC versions. It has been divulged that these new Motherships
have the capacity to "cloak" themselves into invisibility, a-la
"Star Trek." This was seen in last night's terrific episode when
Sid showed Hobbes and Jack the numerous blue energy signatures
being given off by the 538 cloaked Motherships hovering in
Earth's atmosphere, waiting to attack. This is a far-superior
design over the original Motherships and a lethal feature for an
enemy.
In the end, both Mothership designs have their pros and cons,
but I must give the clear winning edge to the new ABC version. A
classic is always a classic, but just as they redesigned the "Battlestar
Galactica" for the new incarnation of that epic sci-fi show to
more accurately reflect a streamlined and improved design for
functioning performance, I would say the same has been done with
"V" and its Motherships. Now, all we can do is hope that we get
to see more of the Motherships in a third season of "V," be it
on ABC, The CW, SyFy Channel, or some other venue. Cross your
lizard claws !!

2/21/2011 - "V" compared to "Fringe?"
I don't THINK so! A recent
article at AfterEllen
written by Heather Hogan states "If
V starts making you doze, you can replace it with Fringe."
Let's get two things clear: I'm sure you can all agree with me, especially
after last week's episode, that "V" doesn't make you fall asleep. And as
much as I hear how great "Fringe" is, it can NOT be compared to our show.
On a happy note, we all love AfterEllen and Heather Hogan, as well as everyone
else who contributes to the AfterEllen site. Because of AfterEllen &
AfterElton, we have become more aware of gay/lesbian/bi/trans issues in
entertainment!

2/09/2011 - 'V'
to end on cliffhanger? Article by Morgan Jeffery, TV Reporter
"The season season of V will end on a cliffhanger, reports suggest.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the show's writing team have decided
to leave several story arcs unresolved, despite the show's middling ratings.
The most recent episode of the sci-fi drama attracted 5.7m viewers, considerably
down on the 14.3m that watched the series premiere in late 2009 but only
slightly below the 5.83m that watched the first season finale in May.
ABC is expected to monitor ratings for the remainder of the second season before
deciding on the show's future. The network will likely make a final decision in
May.
Executive producer Steve Pearlman previously
insisted that a third season of V is still a possibility, while
series star Elizabeth Mitchell (Erica Evans)
stated that the upcoming season finale is "not a wrap-up" for the show."

At an average of 1.9, any show without a skyrocketing budget should be able to make money. According to oft-cited numbers on TVBTN, Vs ad rates were $100,000 each this season. Thats probably about right, but Ive read they were over $120k; Im still going with that lower number as our starting point to do some math.
With about 19 minutes of commercials, ABC can air up to 38 30-second ads per episode (they may have run more, since every episode of V this season ran for 61 minutes, meaning another $200,000 can be made that Im not counting). The shorter, 15 second ads cost more per second, running about $55-60K. If you dont buy ad time in bulk, these prices can actually double, but, again, Im assuming the lower, just so you can see how profitable V is at a minimum.
If half of Vs sellable time is filled by 30 seconds spots and the other half with 15 second ads, youd have $1.9 million for the longer ones and $2.3 million for the shorter ones. Together, that means V is pulling in $4.2m/episode, more than double what it costs WB to produce them, if the oft-quoted $2m per episode cost is correct. If WB licenses V at 3 million per episode, WB would make a $1m profit for each 42 minute show it licenses to ABC. On the other side of the relationship, ABC would make $1.2 million, which means it is making more off of the show than WB and, therefore, the better end of the deal, as should be the case when youre selling something meant to be resold. ABC, then, pulled in $12 million for Vs second season. And that is with the smaller figures used to make a point; that $12m/10 episode season could be up to 20% or so less than ABC actual profit.
By the time V aired this season, ABCs new shows had all flopped (even the ones that were produced in-house). When V came along, its performance, by comparison and on its own wasnt at all horrible, especially considering no ad money was spent on V after its third episode ran, sometime around the State of the Union. If anything, the only mistake ABC made with V was not having an 11th episode, which could have aired last week instead of that best of the movies special, which earned a 1.6 in Vs place, which was lower than V ever went (though, on the bright side, it probably cost nothing to make).
V has not bottomed out, as is clear by the fact that its high (2.1 for the season premiere) is only .2 above its average, (which was at 1.9, its average). Since V will be cheaper to produce next year (with fewer stars/regulars; also, the lions share of its effects were produced for the finale alone and are reused from episode to episode), WB might lower the licensing, but it shouldnt have to, since ABC is making more than twice what it is paying for it.
